Port of Mattawa to approve 2020 budget at November meeting
MATTAWA — The Port of Mattawa commissioners discussed their preliminary 2020 budget at a regular meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 15.
The proposed budget predicts a total income of $617,760 of regular income and $6,000 of interest income. Regular expenses are expected to total $455,152. Loan repayments are expected to total $161,665.37.
In 2020, the Port of Mattawa expects to spend $200,000 in capital expenditures, which includes the purchase of acreage and a building already on port property. The preliminary budget predicts a deficit of $193,957.37 for the year.
“We have money in reserves,” said Lars Leland, director for the Port of Mattawa. “The commissioners are well aware of where we’re at.”
Leland said that the port doesn’t have plans to make any more big land purchases until some of their other land is sold. The port will also be adjusting some of their rates.
“We are working on our rates for utilities, which need updated,” Leland said.
The final budget will be approved during a public hearing on Monday, Nov. 11 at 5 p.m. The Port of Mattawa is located at 20140 Road 24 SW Ste. G.
Port of Mattawa to purchase building
MATTAWA — The Port of Mattawa will be purchasing a building constructed on port property, was the report during a regular meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 15.
The purchase price for the building is $285,000. The building is 4,800 square feet and includes fencing, bathrooms and security cameras.
“It is the same as the appraised value,” said Lars Leland, director for the Port of Mattawa.
Currently, the building is being rented out.
In other business, the Road T.7 project undertaken by the Port of Mattawa is almost complete. A few punchline items are left to be completed. The project is being done by Granite Construction.
The Port of Mattawa will be permanently be changing their meeting time to the second Monday of the month at 5 p.m. The new meeting time will be effective in November.
Othello man killed in Tuesday

OTHELLO — An Othello man died late Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 22, when he drove onto the shoulder, overcorrected and rolled his car.
Hugo Arvizuchervenell, 21, was driving south on SR 17 south of Othello when he drifted off the road onto the right shoulder, according to a press release from the Washington State Patrol. He overcorrected; the car ran into the ditch and rolled, coming to rest on its top about 75 feet off the road, the WSP memo said.
Arvizuchervenell was wearing a seatbelt, the memo said.
