Royal City’s new water treatment system operational

ROYAL CITY — The new ultraviolet wastewater treatment system is fully operational was the report at the regular Royal City City Council meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 15. Public Works Director John Lasen told the council that while it is running, the project is not technically completed. There are still a few minor things that need to be done before the project will be considered complete.

In other business, the council approved a special event application for the Community Christmas Celebration on Dec. 4 at 6 p.m. in Royal City’s Lions Park.

The council heard a report from Theresa Adkinson of the Grant County Health Department. She discussed health district finances and operations. The health department made a presentation around the same time last year.

In a special meeting prior to the regular meeting, the council had their annual budget discussion.

“We do it every year,” said Shilo Christensen, finance director for the City of Royal City. “It was a high level discussion on the 2020 budget.”

Wahluke students to hold candidates forum

MATTAWA — Wahluke High School will be hosting a school board candidates forum tonight, Wednesday, Oct. 23. School board candidates and current members will be given five minutes each to speak. Students and community members will then be given three minutes to ask questions, followed by three minutes for candidates to answer questions.

“This is very kid driven,” said Joel Dugan, Wahluke High School ASB advisor.

Wahluke School Board student representatives Karen Arellano-Cruz and Emma Anderson pushed for this forum to happen. This year, four of the five school board positions are up for election. All positions are contested.

During the forum, students will be registering people to vote.

“We wanted to do it before the cut off for voter registration,” Dugan said.

The school board candidate forum will be held Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Wahluke High School auditorium.
