Football roundup: Royal routs Ki-Be, stays perfect
Royal 56, Kiona-Benton 0
ROYAL CITY — Royal continued to wear the crown in the South Central Athletic Conference East by shutting out Kiona-Benton 56-0.
The Bears (3-1, 5-2) came into the game 3-0 in the SCAC East with a chance to displace the Knights (4-0, 7-0). That idea ended abruptly as Royal raced to a 35-0 lead after one quarter.
Derek Bergeson took an interception back 21 yards to put Royal on the board. Caleb Christensen threw two first-quarter touchdown passes and ran for another. Christensen finished with 217 yards through the air and three touchdown tosses. Elliott Delay rushed for 92 yards and two touchdowns.
The Royal defense recorded its third consecutive shutout and held the Bears to 62 total yards.
Royal’s next challenger is a road game at second-place River View. A win there would sew up another SCAC East league championship.
Wahluke 21, College Place 14
MATTAWA — Wahluke snapped a four-game losing streak with a win against College Place 21-14.
Anthony Zebrano scored two rushing touchdowns, including a 1-yard plunge to break a 14-14 tie. Tony Cruz led the Warriors’ (1-4, 3-4) rushing attack with 91 yards and a 3-yard touchdown in the second quarter.
Wahluke intercepted College Place (0-5, 2-5) quarterback Brian Jerald three times.
Connell 48, Warden 12
WARDEN — Warden struggled to turn yards into points and lost to Connell 48-12.
The Cougars (1-3, 3-4) managed a couple touchdown passes and totaled 337 yards. The Eagles (3-1, 4-3) countered with 408 total yards and five takeaways.
The Cougars will have to win their last two games to have a chance at a crossover playoff game.
