OTHELLO — Hundreds braved 45-degree weather, frigid rain, driving wind and volunteers covering runners with colored powders to finish the second annual Columbia Basin Health Association 5K Color Run in Othello Saturday.

The event seeks to raise awareness of issues related to childhood health and wellness, according to the group’s website, and every $15 registration fee goes to support scholarships and other community events. According to a rough count, nearly 500 runners participated in the event, who were supported by around 150 volunteers that managed stations and showered runners with colorful powders.

“It’s a fun activity to support your community with, and I can do it with the whole family,” said one runner out with her three kids.

“It’s an excuse to skip a cross country meet,” one of her sons adds.

Food vendors The Sno Shack, O-Town Bombers Inc., Mom’s Candy Apples, Othello Drill Team, Arrow Star Concessions and Conversatio Coffee provided a warm treat for participants after they crossed the finish line.
