Facts from the past gleaned from the Moses Lake Herald, Columbia Basin Herald and The Neppel Record by Cheryl (Driggs) Elkins:

From the CBH on June 19, 1975:

Swimming lessons have been set back on week at Swedberg Pool in Moses Lake because of the pool’s emergency closure last week for repainting.

The facility, with an unscheduled new paint job, was to have been reopened to the public this afternoon.

The pool was closes last week for cleaning and repainting by city workers when softening paint began to turn the water cloudy. The original paint contractor, United Paint Manufacturing of Spokane, supplied white paint for the job at no charge.

“It appears to have set up real well,” said Cecil Lee, Parks and Recreation director.

The single coating has been allowed to cure for four and half days, said Lee. The manpower costs and loss of revenue from the shutdown would be hard to calculate, he said.

Jobless rate up locally

Local state-insured unemployment increased during the week ending June 7, the state Employment Security Department indicated Wednesday.

The rate increased from 7.6 to 8.4 percent, with 618 collecting benefits in Moses Lake and 383 in Ephrata.

Statewide, the regular entitlement rate fell from 8.7 to 8 percent that week, an improvement attributed to more outdoor labor activities and tourist services.

From the CBH on April 27, 1981:

Positively speaking

Marilyn Hope

Marilyn Hope, daughter of Lennis and Verla Hope of Moses Lake received an associate degree in Nursing from Ricks College at Rexburg, Idaho, Thursday.

Marilyn was active in the school’s nursing organization, Medicus, and was a nominee for Student Nurse of the Year.

She was awarded the Elbridge A. Stewart Academic Scholarship from Carnation Company during both her years at Ricks.

Faye Maslen

Kudos go to Faye Maslen, owner of “The Book Nook” for her understanding of children.

Although special prizes were awarded to children winning first prize in each age group at Maslen’s Easter coloring contest, she took the time to award each child entering an award ribbon.

Any parent knows how much even a simple ribbon can mean to a child who has tried his or her best.
