MOSES LAKE — A domestic violence suspect who attempted to flee deputies had to be treated at a hospital after he was bitten by K-9 Chewbacca during an altercation.

About 10:15 p.m. Thursday night deputies responded to a domestic violence call in the 4000 block of Orchard Drive Northeast, near Moses Lake. Deputies arrived at the scene, but learned the suspect, Patricio Moncada, 30, of Moses Lake, who had an outstanding felony out for his arrest for domestic violence as well, left the area before deputies arrived.

Moncada was spotted walking nearby and as deputies approached he started to run. K-9 Chewbacca and his handler, Deputy Nic Overland, were dispatched and Chewy was able to catch up with Moncada and apprehended him via a bite to his arm.

Moncada resisted and attempted to fight the K-9, but Chewbacca reportedly fought back and bit Moncada’s other arm and held him until Overland was able to take the suspect into custody. Chewbacca was not injured in the scuffle.

Moncada was transported to Samaritan Hospital in Moses Lake for treatment of the bites. He was later booked into the Grant County Jail for assault, resisting arrest and the felony warrant.
