Ephrata OKs street plans
The Ephrata City Council Wednesday night approved the city’s updated version of its comprehensive street plan.
The comprehensive plan must be updated annually to cover the next six years in order for the city to be eligible for state funds.
In other business, the council approved an ordinance adopting the state building code by reference.
This action brings the city under the provisions of the state’s fire protection, plumbing, structural and mechanical codes.
The council also discussed but took no action on the need for repairs at the city library.
Warden seniors plan meeting
Warden Senior Citizens will meet tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the warden Fire Hall.
Purpose of the meeting will be to discuss the possibility of a Senior Citizen Center in Warden. All persons age 60 or older are urged to attend and voice their opinion about the proposal. Werner Schubothe will conduct the meeting.
Swim lessons postponed
Swimming lessons have been set back on week at Swedberg Pool in Moses Lake because of the pool’s emergency closure last week for repainting.
The facility, with an unscheduled new paint job, was to have been reopened to the public this afternoon.
The pool was closes last week for cleaning and repainting by city workers when softening paint began to turn the water cloudy. The original paint contractor, United Paint Manufacturing of Spokane, supplied white paint for the job at no charge.
“It appears to have set up real well,” said Cecil Lee, Parks and Recreation director.
The single coating has been allowed to cure for four and half days, said Lee. The manpower costs and loss of revenue from the shutdown would be hard to calculate, he said.
Jobless rate up locally
Local state-insured unemployment increased during the week ending June 7, the state Employment Security Department indicated Wednesday.
The rate increased from 7.6 to 8.4 percent, with 618 collecting benefits in Moses Lake and 383 in Ephrata.
Statewide, the regular entitlement rate fell from 8.7 to 8 percent that week, an improvement attributed to more outdoor labor activities and tourist services.
