Saturday opener scheduled

Dennis note: The annual football game between the Chief Moses and Frontier junior high school teams settled the cross-town rivalry. Does anyone remember the prize for winning the game? Read on.

The junior high school football season at Moses Lake opens Saturday.

Officials of the two local junior high schools announced this morning that the Frontier vs. Chief Moses opener will be held 7 p. m. Saturday at Lions Field.

The Saturday date represents a schedule change because the two schools needed extra time to complete the state-required number of practices. School started later at Moses Lake this year, forcing the season opener backwards.

Dennis note: There was a “little brown jug,” which the winner of the game was allowed to keep for the year between games. Mr. Olson asked me to stop by his house a few years ago, when he placed it in my hands. He was keeping it in a secure location for safekeeping.

Here’s another bit of Moses Lake sports history. The names of the three Moses Lake teams are the Braves, for Chief Moses; The Warriors, for Frontier and the Chiefs for the high school.

Many don’t know there was another athletic team in Moses Lake. As with many towns and cities, Moses Lake had a town team in the 1940s and earlier. The name of the town team – naturally – was the Indians.

Red Cross needs donors of blood

Donors are needed to meet Moses Lake’s quota of 140 pints of blood at the American Red Cross blood drawing 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Moses Lake CCD Center, located at the end of Earl Road off Grape Drive.

Appointments can be made by calling 765-5849 or 765-3598. Walk-in donors also are welcome.

Blood is needed for surgery patients and accident victims. The Red Cross Blood Drive is a United Way, Inc., participating agency.
