Royal City Council approves contractor

ROYAL CITY — The Royal City council met for it regular meeting on Tuesday evening, March 5. During the meeting, Apollo Inc, of Kennewick, was awarded the contract for the city’s UV construction project. They will be doing the construction and installation necessary to install the city’s new ultraviolet disinfection system at the wastewater plant. The old system is no longer being supported by the manufacturer.

Council authorized Mayor Kent Andersen to sign the mylars, or drawings, for CAD Homes, of Moses Lake. CAD Homes has platted 20 lots in Royal City and has been building a road, according to Shilo Christensen, finance director for the city. Andersen was also authorized to sign the mylars for Catholic Charities.

The council heard a report from Darryl Piercy, city planner, stating that the city is getting close to signing a contract with Robert Krikac, an associate professor at Washington State University, for his class to do a study to determine the best location for the city to build a new library. According to Christensen, the city has a couple of different options where they could put it. The study will reach out to community members to get feedback on where the location should be. The group SHOC, or Strengthening the Heart of Our Community, is the driving force behind the new library. According to statics they presented at a previous city council meeting, the library is half the size it should be for a town the size of Royal City. While the city doesn’t currently have the funds to build a new library, SHOC is working to help the city with funding.

Christensen asked the council to do a required training for new council members in public records and open public meetings. Currently there are two council members in need of the training.
