Eight-year-old injured in car wreck near Quincy

QUINCY — An eight-year-old boy was transported to Harborview Medical Center for treatment of injuries sustained in a car accident near Quincy early Sunday morning. Charges for DUI are pending against the driver, according to a press release from the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.

The boy suffered a broken back and underwent surgery at Harborview. He was a passenger in a car driven by Bernabe DeLeon Garza, 36, Warden. The accident occurred about 12:20 a.m. Sunday in the 14000 block of Road 7 Northwest.

DeLeon Garza was driving east on Road 7 Northwest when he failed to stop at a stop sign at Road N.5, the press release said. DeLeon Garza drove through the intersection and over an embankment; the car rolled into the bottom of an irrigation canal and came to rest on its top.

The boy was one of three children in the back seat, and at least one of the children was not wearing restraints, the press release said. The other passengers, two children and a woman, and DeLeon Garza were treated at the scene.
