Othello splits final regular-season doubleheader

Othello Red Raiders 13, Yakima Peppers 11

OTHELLO — The Red Raiders built a big lead early and held off a late surge from the visitors July 16 to take Game 1 at home.

Up 6-0 after two innings, Yakima cut the deficit down to just one run before Othello knocked in five more runs in the bottom of the fifth to regain some separation. The Peppers answered with four runs of their own to trim the lead to two. A run in the bottom of the sixth gave the Red Raiders a three-run lead going into the final inning, with the visitors unable to even the score in the top of the inning.

Nathan Garza Jr. and Joshua Garza both had big outings from the plate for Othello in the first game. Garza Jr. finished 4-5, with one RBI, two runs scored and a double. Garza knocked a two-run home run in the bottom of the second, going 2-4 in the game, with three RBIs, and two earned runs.

Jaxon Rocha took the win from the mound for Othello, pitching 2 2/3 innings, with one strikeout, and two runs allowed off one hit. Both teams finished the game with 13 hits apiece. The Red Raiders finished with two errors in the field, while the Peppers finished with three.

Peppers 12, Red Raiders 0

After being a two-run game through four innings, the Peppers poured in ten runs in the top of the fifth to pull away in Game 2 against Othello.

The Peppers went up 2-0 in the top of the second inning. After a pair of scoreless innings from both sides, Yakima exploded to stretch the lead to 12. The Red Raiders were unable to replicate the runs they’d had in the first game of the day. Othello finished with three hits in Game 2, with five errors in the field.

Yakima finished with seven hits as a team, with four errors.

Nathan Garza Jr., Jonathan Gomez and Concepcion Sauceda each secured hits for Othello in the game. Garza Jr. had a triple for the Red Raiders as well.

Finishing up the regular season schedule at 20-18, the Red Raiders will begin postseason play with districts on Friday.
