Fire burns up wheat field

| July 23, 2019 6:45 PM

Blaze was sparked by pickup truck

MOODY – Around 60 acres of wheat in a field burned up near the border between Grant and Adams counties eight miles northwest of Moody Tuesday afternoon after a fire was sparked by a pickup truck that was working on an pivot irrigation system, according to fire officials.

Firefighters from a number of agencies in both counties deployed to the blaze, which threw up dark smoke that drifted for miles, after it was reported at 2:25 p.m. on Road 13 Northeast half of a mile west of Road W Northeast. The fire spread quickly across the field and around the pivot, sparing only the stretch of grass beneath the sprinkler heads.

Though first responders were informed that the fire was caused by a pickup truck on the field, it was not immediately clear if this was due to hot exhaust or another factor, said Jack Zeilenga, battalion chief with Grant County Fire District No. 5.
