Warden press disrupts Wahluke girls offense

| January 16, 2019 12:00 AM

WARDEN — The Warden girls have the best overall record in the SCAC East and the second-best conference record and it showed their 61-11 victory over Wahluke.

The Cougars (12-1, 5-1) threw a zone press at the Warriors that was so disruptive, the Wahluke ball handlers didn’t get the ball across midcourt but a couple of times in the first quarter and the Cougars blazed to a 31-3 lead in the first eight minutes of the SCAC East basketball game at Warden.

“We’ve been running man all year and I wanted to see what the zone press would do,” Warden coach Josh Madsen said. “It was good practice.”

The press created a 10-0 start in the first two minutes, holding the Warriors (1-13, 1-5) to just six first-half points.

Warden freshman Kiana Rios led all scorers with 18 points. Jaryn Madsen scored all 10 of her points in the first half. Aubree Skone added seven points.

Wahluke’s Nelly Bravo, Alondra Lozano and Ana Andrade finished with three points apiece. Andrade made a 3-point shot in the third quarter.

Wahluke is at River View on Friday and Warden hosts College Place.
