My Kitchen opens in Royal City
ROYAL CITY — Handmade tortillas and fresh ingredients are two things that the new Royal City restaurant, My Kitchen, prides itself on.
My Kitchen opened next to Napa in Royal City on Jan. 3.
“We wanted to start this for 10 years,” said Carmen Huitron, head cook and main dreamer for the family-owned restaurant. “It took two and a half years to get this started.”
Huitron is no stranger to the restaurant business. She has worked for many years at restaurants in Mexico and on taco wagons. Owning a restaurant has been a big dream for both her and her husband.
My Kitchen mainly serves Mexican food, such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, tortas and carne asada. They also change up the menu with specials such salmon and shrimp. A different menu is available on Sundays which includes menudo, quesadillas, tortas and goat tacos.
“We hear a lot of good things,” said Huitron’s son, Javier, who also works at the restaurant, “like how it is set up, the taste of the food, everything is fresh and the handmade tortillas.”
Every morning, 15 pounds of tortilla dough is made and rolled into balls. The balls are then flattened and cooked when an order is made. The flattening and cooking process takes between five and 10 minutes.
“People really enjoy the homemade tortillas,” Huitron said. “I like to cook everything fresh or as fresh as possible.”
Huitron said her favorite things to cook are foods that her family likes.
“If they give it a nine or 10, I love it,” said Huitron with a smile. “If they give it a six, I don’t cook it any more. My least favorite thing to make is enchiladas. They make a big mess in the kitchen.”
My Kitchen is open Monday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. They are located at 138 Camelia Street in Royal City.
