Moses Lake man who attacked cop sentenced

MOSES LAKE — One of two Moses Lake men accused of assaulting an officer who was attempting to disperse a crowd that had gathered around another officer pleaded guilty earlier this month.

Robert Reasonable, 18, pleaded guilty to fourth-degree assault. He was sentenced to 364 days in jail, 324 days suspended for two years, with 30 days converted to 240 hours of community service.

Officers had responded July 27 to a report of a fight at Broadway Bar and Grill and spotted a vehicle peeling out from the parking lot. Officers pursued the vehicle to the 1200 block of Ivy Avenue, stopping the car and pulling the driver out.

As backup arrived at the scene, about 10 people were gathering around the arresting officer, screaming at him and disobeying orders, according to a police report. An officer pushed a man back who was approaching and recording the situation with his phone, court documents show.

Seemingly in response, another man, Miguel Perez, 28, approached that officer screaming, assuming a fighting stance and cussing at that officer, according to the police report. The officer pushed Perez back and told him to stop approaching, the officer wrote.

Reasonable then reportedly ran toward the responding officer, yelling and appearing to want to fight the officer, the officer wrote. The officer grabbed Reasonable, attempting to bring him to the ground, but Reasonable reportedly continued to grab on to the officer’s legs.

The officer punched Reasonable several times in the kidneys until he released the officer’s legs but was struck in the face by Perez, according to court documents. Other officers assisted, separating the crowd from the encircled officers, and a K9 unit was deployed to stop Perez. Eventually, officers regained control of the scene, and all involved were checked by paramedics.

As Reasonable’s case made its way through the court, prosecutors requested that he be placed in restraints during hearings, due to the nature of his offense.
