South county roundup: Othello's Perez pins his way to Tri-State title

POST FALLS, Idaho — Isaiah Perez wasn’t pushed into the third round until his final match and pinned his way to a Tri-State championship over the weekend.

The top-ranked heavyweight in all classifications dominated his competition over the two-day tournament, recording five wins by fall. Perez and Elijah Roylance (220) were the Huskies’ two placers; Roylance finished fourth after losing to eventual champion Jacob Vincent of Lake Stevens in the semifinals.

As a team, Othello was 13th with 83 points.

Perez opened his tournament with a bye in the first round before pinning Gage Jorgenson of University in championship round two. Jorgenson was on his back halfway through the first round. Next, Perez collected a few second-round pins against Colin Mercer of Central Valley, Alex Krueger of Meadowdale and Charlie Harrington of Liberty.

Perez pinned Josiah Lara of Skyview early in the third round of championship finals.

Royal finished 44th in the team standings and placed no wrestlers.

In other Basin news, Moses Lake took fourth place with 170 points and had one Tri-State champion and two finalists. Jonathan Tangum (113) won finished first while Hunter White (132) and Cruz Vasquez (160) were both tournament runners-up.

Host Post Falls won the team title.
