Wrestling roundup: ML’s Tanguma, Othello’s Perez win Tri-State championships
POST FALLS, Idaho — Moses Lake crowned one Tri-State champion and nearly took the whole tournament over the weekend in Post Falls.
Jonathan Tanguma (113) avenged last season’s loss to Jarret Sharp of Mt. Spokane with a 3-2 decision in the quarterfinals. Tanguma would advance and beat Eli Warner of Frenchtown 5-1 in the championship.
“Every time Jonathan steps on the mat his confidence is growing,” head coach Jaime Garza said.
The Chiefs finished fourth in the team standings with 170 points; Post Falls held off Mead (174.5), Granger (173) and Moses Lake to win the team title with 176 points. A few matches go the Chiefs’ way and the trophy would return to Moses Lake.
Nevertheless, it was a solid tournament for a team trying to figure out where it falls in the hierarchy of contenders.
“I think we’re in the thick of things,” Garza said.
The Chiefs placed five wrestlers with numerous others adding points along the way.
“I was pleased with the performance of all 15 kids we entered into the tournament,” Garza said.
Freshman Jeremiah Martinez (98) rebounded from an opening-round loss to win four consecutive matches to place third.
“He came off that match with his head up,” Garza said.
Hunter White (132) and Cruz Vasquez (160) were both Tri-State finalists. White lost a close match to Isaac Jessen of Post Falls 7-3. Vasquez was pinned by Gunner Giulio of Coeur d’Alene. Maximus Zamora (145) took seventh in what Garza described as a “tough weight bracket.”
In other Tri-State action, Othello took 13th as a team, scoring 83 points. Isaiah Perez (285) pinned his way to the heavyweight championship while Elijah Roylance (220) finished fourth. Royal scored 30 team points to finish 44th.

Ephrata fourth at Cadet Classic
YAKIMA — Ephrata placed nine at the Cadet Classic and finished fourth overall with 158 points.
Sunnyside ran away with the tournament title, scoring 230.5 points.
The Tigers were led by 195-pound champion Mac Laird. Laird pinned Wenatchee’s Jesus Segovia in the first round. Carter Mills was a tournament finalist, losing to Luke Golden of Peninsula 7-4.
