Big Bend basketball teams both pick up wins

MOSES LAKE — The Big Bend women’s basketball team picked up the road win on Thursday, defeating Pierce 70-44.

The Vikings led by six at the end of the first quarter at 12-6. Both teams were virtually even in the second quarter in scoring, with Big Bend taking a 30-23 lead into the break.

Into the third, the Vikings were able to stretch out their lead, outscoring their opponents 21-10 in the quarter. Big Bend sealed the win in the fourth, outscoring the other team in the second half by a margin of 40-21.

The Vikings held Pierce to just 23 percent shooting in the game. Kayla Luke led the way for Big Bend in scoring, with 20 points. Luke added five boards, six assists and four steals.

Anna Yarbro and Emily Gorrell both finished with double-doubles in the win. Yarbro grabbed 14 rebounds to go along with 12 points. Gorrell finished with 10 and 10 for Big Bend.

Kaitlyn Callahan led the Vikings off the bench with 12 points, chipping in four boards and a pair of steals.

The Vikings move to 7-2 on the season after the win. Next up for Big Bend is a game against Clackamas at home on Friday.

MOSES LAKE — The Runnin’ Vikes defeated Clark at home, 82-75, for their fourth-straight win this season.

The Penguins led by one going into the half at 36-35. Big Bend would come back to go ahead, but would lead by just three with a little more than a minute to play at 76-73. The Runnin’ Vikes would pull away in the final seconds to take the game.

Denis Ulyanchuk led the team with 26 points, adding eight boards, a pair of steals and a block. Jaden Brown wasn’t far behind with 24 for Big Bend. Payton Nielsen had a huge game on the glass, finishing with 19 rebounds.

Next up for the Runnin’ Vikes is a game against Pierce tomorrow afternoon in the final game of the Big Bend College Crossover.

AROUND THE BASIN:

Ephrata boys wrestling match scheduled for Thursday has been moved to Tuesday, Jan. 14. Next up for the Tigers is the Cadet Classic on Saturday.

Moses Lake Christian Academy’s boys and girls basketball games on Thursday were rescheduled as well due to inclement weather.
