Wrestling roundup: ML’s Tanguma wins tournament championship in California

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Moses Lake represented the Pacific Northwest well at the El Cajon Invitational by placing second out of 30 teams.

At the California tournament, Moses Lake was one of two teams outside the state to compete, along with Cienega of Arizona.

Jonathan Tanguma’s 113-pound championship highlighted a group of Chiefs that had nine placers and was second overall in the team standings with 231.5 points. Rancho Bernardo took the team title with 284 points.

Tanguma won by fall in his first two matches before securing a 21-2 technical fall of Scripps Ranch’s Mitchell Hallmark in the quarterfinals. Tanguma then won by major decision, 12-4, over Brandon Eusebio of Rancho Bernardo in the semifinals. Tanguma’s championship match against Rancho Bernardo’s Nikko Beato ended by injury default.

Andrew Kile also made a deep run in the 220-pound championship bracket, finishing as a tournament runner-up. Kile was pinned by Central Union’s Andrew Castillo in the second round of the first-place match. Everett Ashley (195) and Ryan Grubb (126) both finished third with wins in the consolation final.

West Valley Wrestle-Rama

Ephrata fourth at dual tournament

SPOKANE — Ephrata finished 3-2 at the West Valley Wrestle-Rama to place fourth as a team.

The Tigers defeated Freeman, Shadle Park and East Valley of Spokane at the dual tournament. However, the Tigers opened their tournament run with a loss to Lake City 52-27.

It was nearly two defeats in a row until a final forfeit gave Ephrata a narrow victory against Freeman 41-40. Ephrata followed with consecutive wins against Shadle Park 54-25 and East Valley 52-30. Lakeside was able to nab third place with a 53-30 win. Mac Laird wrestled twice and won by fall each time.

Quincy lost to Eastmont 54-30, West Valley of Spokane 48-30, Cheney 64-9, and Lakeside 57-24.
