OTHELLO — The Veterans of Foreign Wars’ auxiliary representatives will be in Othello on Thursday, Aug. 15, to talk about the benefits they have to offer to those who are eligible for membership.

Anyone who may be eligible is invited to attend and find out more about the benefits, which include a cancer grant they will talk about.

Those eligible include husbands, wives, widows or widowers, parents, grandparents, children, grandchildren and siblings. To be eligible for membership, they must also be citizens of the United States, United States nationals, profess a belief in God and be at least 16 years of age.

Any current VFW member or any person eligible to join the VFW shall not be eligible to join the auxiliary. Women who joined prior to Aug. 21, 2015, and are current members or are eligible for membership in the VFW shall be eligible for the auxiliary so long as their membership remains current.

The member you are joining under must have an honorable discharge from the service and the veteran has to have been awarded a campaign medal or service medal of the United States.

There is a long list of campaigns and wars where the ribbons were issued and if you have a copy of their discharge papers, it will help determine your eligibility.

The meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. the Baptist church on the corner of Pine Street and 12th Avenue across from the swimming pool. We will start the meeting at 7:30 pm.

“We hope to see you there,” Roger Schell, VFW Post 8889 commander. “They have some great benefits for their members.”
