WINCHESTER - A Quincy man who was found in a stolen car was detained by K9 Chewbacca Thursday after he reportedly fled onto a nearby residential property to escape police, according to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.
Police were dispatched after the owner of a stolen vehicle noticed his car was in the 10750 block of state Route 28, near the town of Winchester. When deputies arrived, Joshua Avalos, 28, of Quincy, reportedly lept from the passenger side of the vehicle and fled onto a nearby property.
The property’s residents allowed deputies to search the property, where Avalos was reportedly located in a storage area hiding behind a stack of mattresses. Avalos was reportedly warned to surrender himself before Chewbacca was sent to retrieve him. Avalos was allegedly attempting to kick through the wall of the storage area in order to escape when Chewbacca grabbed hold of his shoulder.
Avalos was booked in the Grant County Jail on an outstanding misdemeanor warrant related to domestic violence, malicious mischief, as well as burglary and resisting arrest, according to law enforcement.
