Siphon bill advances

Sen. Warren G. Magnuson, D-Wash., announced a Senate Appropriations subcommittee has adopted a public works bill which assigns $5.78 million to the proposed second Bacon Siphon and tunnel south of Coulee City, Wash.

The siphon, which is projected to cost $48.8 mission, could carry up to 12,050 cubic feet of water from Banks Lake to the existing Main Canal of the Columbia Basin Irrigation Project to irrigate another 556,800 acres in the Basin.

Magnuson said the public works bill also contained $431 million in appropriations for constructions projects either in or directly affecting the state of Washington.

Big Bend to assist tax form wrestlers

Income tax paying time is just around the corner.

Big Bend Community College will start a short course Tuesday to help the average home owner wrestle with his tax return.

The class, taught by Norman Wood, Moses Lake Certified Public Accountant, will be conducted on the next four Tuesdays from 7 p.m. to 9:50 p.m. in room 1303 of the business education building on the new campus at Grant County Airport.

The class will deal with principles of completing the long form 1040 income tax return.

Big Bend officials explained that the class is oriented more toward the average wage earner rather than farmers and merchants. Registration will be at the first class Tuesday.
