12-year-old bicyclist struck by vehicle near Schawana

SCHWAWANA — A 12-year-old boy riding a bicycle was struck and injured near Schawana over the weekend.

About 8:20 p.m. Saturday night a 12-year-old boy from Mattawa was riding his bicycle south on state Route 243 when he reportedly crossed the fog line and went into the oncoming lane of travel. The boy was struck by a 2009 Chevrolet Traverse driven by Maritza Ponce Tapia, 29, of Mattawa, who was traveling south on SR-243, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The boy was injured in the collision and transported to Kadlec Medical Center in Richland for treatment. The patrol listed the official cause of the collision as the boy failing to yield the right-of-way.
