Convicted felon arrested for assaulting MLPD officer
MOSES LAKE — A man was arrested in Moses Lake over the weekend after he allegedly assaulted a cop, after which police found methamphetamine and a pipe in his belongings.
About 1:05 p.m. on Sunday Moses Lake officers came across a suspicious vehicle on Penn Street. Police looked into the vehicle and reportedly spotted a gun on the floorboard, according to police records. The owner of the vehicle, identified as 52-year-old Jimmy Hughes, later emerged from a nearby field where transients are known to camp out in the city.
Hughes allegedly made a series of suspicious movements and upon being searched for weapons he started to resist and fight with the officers. At some point during the struggle at least one MLPD officer was assaulted.
After police were able to gain control over Hughes they reportedly found methamphetamine and a meth pipe in his belongings. Hughes, a convicted felon, was arrested and booked into the Grant County Jail for third-degree assault, possession of methamphetamine, unlawful possession of a firearm and obstruction of a law enforcement officer. Hughes’ vehicle was seized by police as evidence.
