Football roundup: Moses Lake shut out by first-place Eastmont
MOSES LAKE — Eastmont took one step closer to the state tournament and Moses Lake took one step closer to the finish line.
First-place Eastmont (5-0, 8-1) used its option run attack, with some chunk pass plays sprinkled in, to beat Moses Lake (1-4, 3-6) 35-0.
Logan Sperline got the start in place of a banged up Dominic Signorelli and the narrowed offense made for limited scoring opportunities. Sperline did cross the goal line on a 19-yard keeper in the second quarter, however, the touchdown was negated due to a holding and unsportsmanlike conduct penalty that moved the ball back near midfield.
Moses Lake threatened again in the fourth quarter, but Sperline was intercepted in the red zone.
Conversely, Eastmont looked every bit the No. 1 of the Columbia Basin Big Nine in the first half. Carson Talley and Caelen Massey had touchdown runs of 3 and 16 yards in the first quarter.
Massey added to his night with a 78-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter and Talley followed with a 41-yard breakaway rush on a counter play.
After a three-and-out by Moses Lake to start the second half, Eastmont scored on its first play when Massey hauled in a 34-yard over-the-shoulder touchdown reception in the corner of the end zone.
Moses Lake finishes its season at Sunnyside on Friday. Eastmont will try to clinch a state tournament berth with a win at crosstown rival Wenatchee.
