RICHLAND - Two Mattawa residents were injured on Wednesday in a two-vehicle collision in Benton County west of Richland.

About 1:35 p.m. Ramon Sanchez, 47, of Mattawa, was driving a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta west on state Route 240, about 30 miles west of Richland, and attempted to turn west onto state Route 24. He ended up striking a 2016 Freightliner semi-truck driven by Thomas T. Thomas, 61, of Central Point, Ore., in the intersection, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Thomas, Sanchez and his passenger, a 14-year-old boy from Mattawa, were injured in the collision and transported to Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Spokane for treatment. The Jetta and semi-truck were both totaled in the collision.

The patrol reports the cause of the collision was Sanchez failing to yield the right of way. Charges are pending against Sanchez.
