Pete Doumit was an example for us all

| November 29, 2018 2:00 AM

On Nov. 16, my son Jason and I attended Coach Pete Doumit’s funeral services, along with 800 others. That figure should tell everyone who didn’t have the honor of knowing Coach what kind of man he was. If every community had a Pete Doumit, the world would be a much better place.

How many lives did he touch? The number is too high to even begin to calculate. He was a teacher, a principal and always a baseball coach.

Jason had the good fortune to have Mr. Doumit as his coach quite a while ago. I once asked him, “out of all your coaches, who would you choose to emulate?” His immediate response: “Coach Doumit.” Pete was everything you would want in a coach: wanting a strong work ethic, attendance, being responsible and respect for all. In all the years I knew Coach, I don’t ever remember him raising his voice. He was the coach with class.

In looking around at Coach’s services, I noticed a lot of baseball players of various ages – mid-40s to younger. All proud to be members of Coach Doumit’s team.

Coach Doumit’s legacy will live on through his players, his students and everyone he came in contact with. Be fair, work hard, treat everyone with respect, love what you do, be involved with your community and its young people.

Be a member of Coach Doumit’s team forever.

We all were blessed when Pete and Faith chose to bring their young family to Moses Lake, to make it their home.

We are all better for it.
