Othello tennis sends two doubles teams and one singles to State
PULLMAN — District 5/6 doubles champions Macy Hampton and Daishawn Roylance, singles runner-up Kyler Villarreal, and the No. 4 seed out of the Glue-In Sub Regional doubles Levi Garza and Josh Valdez are representing Othello in the 2A State Tournament at the Nordstrom Tennis Center May 25-26.
Hampton and Roylance knocked off the District No. 1 seeded doubles team of Kalli Willet and Allison Manion from East Valley, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. The duo matches up with Kyrene Eddy and Haley from Sehome High School in Round 1.
Promising singles player Julissa Cantu looked to be on her way to the big dance as well after winning her first three district matches, but lost a semifinal match to No. 1 seeded Mary-Frances Ballew from Selah. She then lost a consolation match to Grandview’s Viviana Gill 6-1, 6-1 and was bounced out of the postseason.
“The girl’s doubles played their best match of the season. They had an easy road to the district finals where they had a chance to avenge their only loses of the season to East Valley and did so,” Huskies coach Robert Pruneda said. “Julissa played very well getting all the way to the semis. But it was a very hot day and she ended up running out of gas.”
Boys
District No. 2 seeded Villarreal, who is making his third straight trip to the big dance, fell to the No. 1 seed Jared Kieser from Selah 6-0,6-0 in the championship match. He’ll go up against Ridgefield’s Spencer Cultrice in the opening round of the State Tournament.
Doubles Garza and Valdez who turned back Quincy’s Gates Petersen and Randy Hodges 6-3, 6-2 to take the Glue Crossover consolation bracket, will matchup with Justus Jagodzinski and Nate Blanchard from North Kitsap in Round 1.
