Warden seeks another new council member

WARDEN — If you live in Warden and have a hankering to participate in city government, then the Warden City Council really wants you.

At a regular council meeting on Tuesday, council member Kayla Kight announced her resignation, saying she and her husband were leaving Warden temporarily to take care of a friend in Arizona who has cancer.

“I know I’ll be back,” Kight told council members.

Kight’s resignation leaves the Warden City Council with a second vacancy. The city was already working to fill an empty seat following the resignation of Michael Leavitt in April after his arrest on charges of voyeurism.

“This is Kayla’s last meeting, and we need some instructions on the council’s wishes,” said City Administrator, Clerk and Treasurer Kristine Shuler. “Do we continue (looking for new members) the way we are doing it now?”

The council agreed to continue advertising for the open positions.

Council Member Byron Starkey said Kight, who is also heavily involved in the city’s Lions Club, will be missed.

Currently, the three-member council consists of Starkey, Omar Pruneda and Rosalie Martinez as well as Mayor Tony Massa. There has been a great deal of churn on the Warden City Council so far this year, and Massa said at one point earlier this year he had to swear in new council members just to have a quorum.

Anyone interested in serving on the Warden City Council can call the Warden City Hall at 509-349-2326 or send an e-mail to Shuler at kshuler@cityofwarden.org.
