Gut check time for Othello Baseball

The Huskies opened CWAC league play with four straight wins and took five of their first six games. But Othello hit a major bump in the road and has now won just three of its last nine, and is mired in a six game losing streak heading into postseason play.

The Huskies closed out the regular season with two road losses to Selah Saturday to finish sixth in the conference, which was good enough to grab the final playoff berth.

The first game of the twin bill saw Othello take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Selah answered back with two in the bottom of the frame and then added three runs in the home half of the fourth. The Huskies hung their second run of the contest on the board in the top of the sixth. Othello had four hits in the ball game, but the Huskie Achilles Heel this season surfaced once again as the team committed three errors, which led to three unearned runs in the opener.

Josh Calzadillas got the start and went the distance giving up five runs off seven hits. He fanned six Vikings and walked two.

Two singles off Jonathan Garza led to two Selah runs in the bottom of the first and that was all the Vikings needed to pull off the win in the nightcap. The 2-0 score held up until Calzadillas singled home Gage Pruneda in the top of the sixth. The Huskies glimmer of hope to salvage a win was dashed when Selah pushed two across the dish in the bottom of the inning. Othello did threaten in the top of the seventh when AJ Pruneda drew a walk and Calzadillas singled. But both were left stranded on base.

The Vikings bats torched Garza and Gage Pruneda who combined to surrender 10 hits in the ballgame.

The Huskies, hoping to extend their season, hit the road to East Valley Tuesday to play a loser out game with the No. 3 seeded Red Devils. The game was in progress when the paper went to print. A win would put Othello up against No. 2 seed Selah in round two action at Carlon Park in Selah Saturday.
