MATTAWA — The Miss Mattawa Scholarship Program awarded over $6,000 in scholarships to five high school junior girls Saturday, March 10.

Ashley Jenne was named Miss Mattawa and was the recipient of a $1,500 scholarship. Runner-up Adilene Sandoval received a $1,000 scholarship.

The Miss Mattawa Scholarship Program is built on excellence in five areas: Scholastic, Interview, Fitness, Talent and Self Expression. The program also highlighted the fact that together the five young women accumulated over 700 hours of service in their schools, churches and community during their high school years. All scholarship funds were supported by individuals and businesses in the community. Miss Mattawa will represent the community at area functions.

The two winners in each of the five-judged categories received scholarships of $300 and $250. Scholastic (Adilene Sandoval and Ashley Jenne) Judge’s Interview (Sydney Zirker and Adilene Sandoval) Fitness (Sydney Zirker and Ashley Jenne) Talent (Ashley Jenne and Sydney Zirker) Self Expression (Sydney Zirker and Ashley Jenne).  Four character awards of $300 each were also given to Eunice Gonzalez (2), Sydney Zirker and Liliana Lopez.

Mattawa has had a women’s scholarship program for 20 years. This is the first year it has been independent of a national program. The program was co-hosted by local Mattawa teens: Miss Teen Rodeo Washington Shelby Eckenberg, and Mattawa’s 2017 Distinguished Young Women Jessica Arellano, who spent the summer as a LEDA scholar at Princeton.
