Thank you, Moses Lake School Board
At their last meeting, the Moses Lake School Board authorized a land purchase in the amount of $1.4 million for 6 acres of land adjacent to Moses Lake High School. This purchase was made to address concerns that first responders would have difficulty reaching the high school in the event of an emergency. The issue with current traffic access via Sharon Avenue is that there aren’t enough lanes of traffic for the number of students and teachers at the high school. This land purchase allows the school district to substantially increase access without paving a completely new road or expanding any existing roads.
I want to take this opportunity to thank the school board for hearing the concerns of the Chief of Police, Kevin Fuhr, as well as members of the community and acting swiftly on those concerns. I voiced some pretty harsh criticisms to the board the first time I addressed them. I believe that this board has proven itself capable to meet the challenges of keeping our kids safe. While addressing safety and security of schools is a job that is never “finished,” I am convinced that we have a school board that is up to the task that we elected them to do.
As the board moves forward with addressing the much more controversial issues surrounding the construction bond, I encourage members of the community to take this action by the board as evidence that they have the best interests of the students and teachers of our schools at heart. We can support them while also voicing concerns we may have with the upcoming decisions that need to be made.
