Cashmere Student Wins grand prize in Year of the Apple Art Contest

WENATCHEE — Cashmere High School student Eli Haney was the grand prize winner in the 23rd Annual Washington Apple Education Foundation (WAEF) Year of the Apple Art Contest sponsored by Corteva Agriscience. Haney received a check in the amount of $1,000 for his efforts and will see his artwork published on the 2019 Corteva Agriscience calendar poster. He received surprise notification at the Cashmere High School end of the year awards ceremony.

Second place winner, Parker Harrison from Richland High School won $500 and Abigail Thyssen from Warden High School was awarded third place and $250 for her entry.

In addition to student prizes, their classroom or teacher, received a $150 Amazon gift card to help purchase art supplies.

The art contest is open to all students in grades 9th — 12th in Adams, Chelan, Douglas, Okanogan, Grant, Benton, Franklin, Kittitas, Yakima and Walla Walla counties. This year 162 students submitted entries into the contest. Students may submit entries in a variety of traditional artistic mediums.

The grand prize artwork can be viewed at www.waef.org/yearoftheapple/. Entry forms and contest rules for the 2019 Year of the Apple art contest will be available Dec. 1, 2018 on the WAEF event website. The deadline for students to submit entries is May 1st, 2019.

2019 Year of the Apple poster calendars will be available Dec. 3-5 at the Corteva Agriscience booth at the Washington State Tree Fruit Association Annual Meeting in Yakima. To receive a copy via the mail, please contact the WAEF office at 509 663-7713.
