Using your cell phone while driving is risky

| June 7, 2018 3:00 AM

We are concerned with the health and safety of our peers because:

Talking on a cell phone with or without a hands-free device – increases the chance of crashing by 4 times (Washington Traffic Safety Commission).

Texting drivers look down for 5 seconds at a time on average – enough time at highway speeds to cover more than a football field (Washington Traffic Safety Commission).

A texting driver is 23 times more likely to get into a crash than a non-texting driver (Washington Traffic Safety Commission).

Teen drivers increase their risk of crashing 700 percent by simply reaching for a phone (New England Journal of Medicine).

During a recent survey of Moses Lake High School students, most students reported being in a car while the driver was distracted.

We encourage our peers to make healthy choices. Please remind friends and family to park their phones while driving this summer.

Because we care,

Alianna Valdez, President

Moses Lake High School Youth Action Team
