PHOENIX — Former Othello standout David Garza was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 38th round of the MLB draft.

Garza, who was pick No. 1,149, recently completed his collegiate career at Tennessee Tech University.

Garza was a three-sport athlete for Othello, excelling at football, basketball and — of course — baseball. More, Garza collected all-area and all-state honors at shortstop for the Huskies.

From Othello, Garza began his collegiate baseball career at Edmonds Community College. He had to sit out his true freshman year due to injury, but as a redshirt freshman in 2015 Garza hit .302 with 42 hits, 22 RBI and six home runs.

Garza transferred from Edmonds to Tennessee Tech in 2016 and proceeded to start every game at shortstop. Against Alabama A&M during his sophomore season, Garza tied the school record for hits in a single game with six. Garza also drove in five runs and hit a grand slam in that same game.

The 6-foot-1 right-hander continued to improve during his time with the Golden Eagles and racked up 69 RBI and 16 home runs with a .310 average his senior season.

Garza finished his time at Tennessee Tech with a career average of .300, 23 home runs and 134 RBI.
