MOSES LAKE — High school junior girls interested in participating in the Moses Lake Distinguished Young Women pageant are invited to one of two orientation sessions in February. Orientation meetings are at 7 p.m. Feb. 21 and 22 in the cafeteria at Chief Moses Middle School. Girls can attend either session – the information is the same at both – and should bring a parent or guardian with them.

The 2018 pageant is scheduled for April 7 at the Moses Lake High School theater. “Glitz and Glam” is the 2018 theme. Practices begin about a month before the program, which is one of the subjects discussed at the orientation meetings.

Participants go through scholastic assessment and an interview with the judges prior to the program. All participants perform an individual routine designed to highlight their talents, and answer an individual question. There’s also a group fitness routine.

The winner competes in the state Distinguished Young Women program in August and the winner of that advances to the national program. The winner also appears at events in town and around the state. A number of college scholarships are awarded, but organizer Bonnie Dorris said in an earlier interview that the goal is to give all the girls confidence and show them what they can do, whether or not they qualify for a scholarship.
