Work together on school bond

Whether you believe that the best interests of Moses Lake School District students require a second high school or not, one thing is certain. If we truly want what’s best for our students we are going to have to find a way to work together.

The currently disputed bond, even if it had not been contested, will still have issues that need to be addressed. Hopefully we will be able to count on state funds soon but, if not, that shortfall will have to be compensated for somewhere. Additionally, the levy funding formula has been altered radically and that will have a curtailing effect on any structures that we build and staff.

Fortunately there is something else that is certain. Our school board was comprised of good people before the last election, and it is still comprised of good people who are there to make the sometimes hard decisions needed to move the education process forward. What kind of example then are we setting for our children when we harass, intimidate and, in some cases, bully our school board members for doing what they were elected to do by a majority of this community?

As an educator, a parent, and a member of our community, I am making a plea: No matter what side of the bond issue you are on, please remember that our students, our children, are watching. Any one of us could have run for the school board but these current members chose to stand up and work toward solutions. Standing up with them makes us part of the solution as well, not part of the problem. I am pro-student.
