Democrats support new high school

At its January meeting Grant County Democrats (GDC) voted to support the original intent of the Moses Lake Schools bond. No one spoke in favor of supersizing Moses Lake High School. Reasons given for sticking to the original plan were:

1. Quality of staff-student interaction is curtailed by students being on differing time schedules in MLHS’ chaotic “extended day.”

2. MLHS’ overcrowding means the student body is split. For instance, it’s impossible for get everyone together for an all-school assembly.

3. Heavy traffic, due to a huge student body in “tracks” coming and going throughout the day, makes it difficult, if not impossible, in case of an emergency for first-response to happen quickly.

4. Having two high school would likely means more students could be involved in school sports and other extra-curricular activities.

5. Individual needs are more likely to be met in smaller school settings.

6. Many volunteer hours and much money were put into passing the bond.

7. The bond passed through a supermajority of 60 percent; our votes should count.

8. To change what happens from what people voted for can be viewed as contrary to Washington State’s Constitution.
