QUINCY — East Valley held Quincy scoreless for a five-minute stretch from the last four minutes of the first half through a minute and a half into the third quarter to run away 56-32 in Saturday night’s CWAC boys basketball game at Woodworth Court.

The Red Devils (6-10, 5-9 CWAC) smothered the Jacks with a zone press to the timeline and stifling man defense when they finally did get it across to take the Jacks (1-15, 1-13 CWAC) completely out of their game.

Quincy did make an 8-2 run late in the third quarter to cut the gap to 10 points, 36-26, with 3:30 left in the third. The stayed within reach, 40-30, going into the final period. But the Red Devils went on a 12-2 run to open the final quarter and the Jacks scored just two points in the final eight minutes.

“We lost track of a couple of kids there in the second quarter. They’re good shooters and made us pay,” Quincy coach Wade Petersen said. “It’s been a disappointing season and the rest of the schedule is more about us showing what we’re about. We want to battle and keep playing hard.”

Max Molina, a 5-foot-10 junior, and Trajan Trevino, a 6-3 senior, scored 24 of the Jacks 32 points. The scoring tandem had back-to-back 3-point goals in the first half when the Jacks closed to 22-18 two minutes into the second quarter. But Quincy didn’t handle the East Valley press well and things spiraled to a 20-point deficit late in the game.

“The kids were upset afterwards. But they’re trying their hardest to do the things we’ve been working on. As a coach, that’s all you can ask for,” Petersen said. “We need to just keep battling and have fun playing the game.”

East Valley had four players in double figures. Ryan Sullivan led the Red Devils with 12 points. Sahill Randhawa, 6-4 forward, finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Charley Harrington and Alex Nagle added 10 points apiece.

The Jacks are at Wapato on Friday and back at Woodworth Court on Saturday when they host Grandview.
