Prep roundup: Moses Lake unable to close out sixth-ranked Davis

MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake was unable to close out sixth-ranked Davis and lost 68-60.

After trailing the entire first half, Moses Lake took its first lead after Zach Phillips assisted on a basket by Michael Byers. Phillips made 1-of-2 free throws to pull the Chiefs ahead by two points, 42-40.

Both teams traded buckets before Davis ended the third quarter on a 6-0 run.

The Pirates maintained their lead the entirety of the fourth quarter. The Chiefs drew as close as three points, 63-60, after Zach Phillips drilled a 3-pointer from the right wing. Evan McLean stole the inbounds pass on Davis’ ensuing possession, but turned the ball over.

Davis was as advertised in the early going, racing to an 9-0 lead in the first quarter. Davis point guard Alexzander Delgado totaled 18 points in the first half, finishing with a game-high 25.

Phillips did his best to match, scoring 10 of his team-high 21 points in the fourth quarter.

Moses Lake lost to Wenatchee the previous night 56-42. Cory Kunjara scored nine points.

Toppenish 83, Ephrata 63-Ephrata 67, Wapato 66

Ephrata was outscored by 16 in the second half and lost to Toppenish 83-63.

Caden Blankenship scored a team-high 16 points.

Hunter James made a free throw with less than two seconds to play, giving Ephrata a narrow win over Wapato 67-66.

Jakob Oxos led the Tigers with 20 points.

Wapato 87, Othello 80-East Valley 76, Othello 46

Othello could not upset Wapato, losing 87-80.

Kyler Villarreal scored 13 points in a 76-46 loss at East Valley.

Prosser 67, Quincy 61 (OT)-Ellensburg 54, Quincy 35

Quincy led 22-20 at halftime, but could not close out Prosser 67-61.

Max Molina led the Jacks with 14 points in their loss to the Bulldgos 54-35. Gates Petersen added 10 points.

Almira/Coulee-Hartline 70, Republic 7-Almira/Coulee-Hartline 71, Cusick 53

Almira/Coulee-Hartline held Republic to seven points through three quarters and won 70-7.

The Warriors led 53-5 at halftime.

ACH built a 39-19 halftime lead and beat Cusick 71-53. Maguire Isaak scored 25 points.

Warden 66, College Place 47-Royal 57, Warden 32

Warden split league games with College Place and Royal.

Zach Richins posted a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead Warden over College Place 66-47. Dreyton Martinez totaled 22 points, five assists and four steals.

Royal improved to 7-0 in the SCAC East after its win over Warden 57-32.

Wahluke 72, Columbia 43-Wahluke 70, Connell 62

Wahluke stayed in a tie for second place in the SCAC East with two wins.

Ricky Cabrera scored 31 points to lead Wahluke over Columbia 72-43. Wahluke outscored Columbia 39-20 over the second and third quarters to pull away.

Cabrera stayed hot and poured in 38 points in Wahluke’s win against Connell 70-62. Sergio Pineda scored 16 points.

Toppenish 49, Ephrata 48-Wapato 64, Ephrata 49

Ephrata lost a pair of league games to drop below .500.

Avery Mickelsen and Katelyn Ostrowski scored 11 points each, but Toppenish held on to win 49-48.

Janealle Sutterlict and Jade Garza paced the Wolves with 18 points apiece to beat Ephrata 64-52. Madison Martin led the Tigers with 10 points.

Wapato 64, Othello 18-East Valley 60, Othello 32

Othello struggled on the road in losses to Wapato and East Valley.

Alexis Coronado scored a team-high five points in the 64-18 loss against the Wolves.

Othello hung around for a half against East Valley before surrendering a 24-6 third quarter and losing 60-32.

Macy Hampton paced the Huskies with 16 points.

Prosser 79, Quincy 20-Ellensburg 62, Quincy 35

Quincy dropped two games at home, running its league record to 0-12.

Quincy was shutout 21-0 in the first quarter in its 79-20 loss to Prosser.

Corina Cervantes scored a team-high seven points against Ellensburg. The Bulldogs won 62-35.

Almira/Coulee-Hartline 67, Republic 10-Almira/Coulee-Hartline 73, Cusick 40

Almira/Coulee-Hartline locked down Republic to win 67-10.

Republic was held scoreless in the third quarter. Gabi Isaak had 19 points and Tiffany Boutain added 10.

ACH outscored Cusick every quarter and won comfortably 73-40. Isaak scored a game-high 18 points.

Columbia 63, Wahluke 29-Connell 62, Wahluke 38

Wahluke dropped to an even 4-4 in league play after losses to Columbia, 63-29, and Connell, 62-38.

The Coyotes led 34-24 at halftime and extended that advantage in the second half. Jacky Barajas scored nine points for the Warriors.

Moses Lake fifth at 41st Matman Classic

SILVERDALE — Moses Lake totaled 107 team points to finish fifth at the 41st annual Matman Classic.

Beau Mauseth was Moses Lake’s lone champion, defeated Auburn Riverside’s Sam Onishchenko 7-5 in overtime in the 182-pound final.

Mauseth ground out his trip to the finals with just one win by fall. After pinning Jonathon Richards of Auburn Riverside in the second round of the quarterfinals, Mauseth outlasted sixth-ranked Tayven King of Mt. Spokane 4-3 in the semifinals.

Hunter Cruz pinned his way to the 170-pound championship, but ran into Duke commit Mason Eaglin of South Kitsap. Eaglin edged Moses Lake’s defending state champion 4-3.

Moses Lake also had a trio of fourth-place finishers: Jonathan Tanguma (106), Bailey Sanchez (195) and Payton Castro (220).

Tanguma and Castro both fell in championship semifinals. Tanguna lost to second-ranked Jacob Bennett of Lake Stevens 6-2 and Castro lost to Chris Sparks of Graham-Kapowsin 12-10 in overtime. Sparks is ranked No. 3 in state, one spot ahead of Castro.

Lake Stevens bested Tahoma by one point to win the team championship 167.5-166.5.

Othello crowns two champions at home invite

OTHELLO — Othello had two individual champions and won its Lady Huskie Invite.

Emily Mendez shook off a hyper-extended elbow to win the 105-pound championship. Mendez pinned second-ranked Alexandra Puzon of Enumclaw in the semifinals before beating Maria Reyes of Grandview 8-2 for the championship.

Elizabeth Giles won by fall over River View’s Kasye Magana in the 140-pound championship.

Estephania Vargas was runner-up at 235 pounds.

Ephrata’s Mya Spencer reached the 125-pound finals, but lost by fall to buzz-saw Cameron Guerin of Davis. Guerin is a three-time state champion.
