OTHELLO — The Othello Police Department successfully used Narcan for the first time Thursday night to revive an overdose victim.

About 8:25 p.m. OPD officers responded to the 200 block of East Hemlock Street for a medical call. Officers arrived at the location before emergency medical responders and reportedly located an unconscious male who had shallow breathing and whose health “was quickly fading,” the OPD stated in a release.

Officers determined the male was possibly suffering from a narcotics overdose and used their department-issued Narcan. The male was able to regain consciousness and officers carried the male to an ambulance and he was transported to Othello Community Hospital for treatment.

Every OPD officer was trained on how to use and issued Narcan back in September. Narcan can be used to help revive victims of heroin, morphine, fentanyl, codeine, hydrocodone, oxycodone, meperidine and methadone overdoses. Thursday night’s use of Narcan was the first application of Narcan by the OPD.

“We are very happy this event ended successfully,” the OPD stated in a release.
