Chamber wants stop sign at the Burke Y removed

From the Moses Lake Herald on Aug. 29, 1941:

Dennis note: No. 10 must be Highway 10, which is now Interstate 90. The Beverly/Burke road is near George. Not sure where No. 7 is/was. The mystery is: Why would the Chamber request to have the stop sign removed? If the sign was on Highway 10, a fast traveling highway, there would be no reason for traffic to stop, so removing the sign is understandable. Anyone else able to add to this information? Can you imagine a stop sign on I-90? Read on.

Chamber meets

Quite a number attended the regular meeting Wednesday night of the Moses Lake Chamber of Commerce, held in the city hall. Several matters of importance were taken up and discussed. A resolution was passed and sent to the state highway officials at Olympia requesting the removal of the “Stop” sign at the Burke Y, where No. 10 crosses No. 7. A report of the finance committee for the Carnival and Regatta was received. Frank Lees, president, presided.

Former resident in hospital

Word has been received here that Fred Gailey is in the Deaconess Hospital suffering from cancer of the liver. Mr. Gailey came to Moses Lake and homesteaded, nearly 30 years ago, and lived here for 25 years, leaving about five years ago to live at Rice, Wash.

Dennis note: Wondering if this is the namesake for Gailey’s Island at the tip of the Peninsula? Seems he raised goats on the island. Also wonder if this is where his homestead was located?
