MOSES LAKE — Frontier Middle School was briefly on “modified lockdown” Thursday morning because of a threat written on a bathroom wall, according to Moses Lake School District spokesperson McKenna Reis.

“They were put on a modified lock down this morning due to a statement written on a bathroom stall. The MLPD is there assessing the situation determining (if) the statement is a credible threat to the school,” Reis wrote in a statement to the Columbia Basin Herald.

The police determined the threat was not credible, Reis added, allowing the school to return to normal operations.

According to Capt. David Sands of the Moses Lake Police, a school resource officer was dispatched to Frontier about 8:30 a.m. after someone discovered “I’m going to be a professional school shooter” written in pencil on a bathroom wall.

Next to that, Sands said, was also written, “said the Florida school shooter.”

“It was determined not to be a direct threat,” Sands said.

However, Sands added the school was locked down for nearly three hours while police looked into the matter.

Sands said there is evidence indicating the statement might have been written the day before. Because the restroom is public, it will take some time to determine who might have written it, Sands said.

The Moses Lake School District sent out the following e-mail to parents and guardians of students at Frontier Middle School:

“Today our school went into a lockdown for approximately two hours to investigate a possible threat that was written in a boys bathroom stall. The Moses Lake Police Department joined the administrative team and conducted a thorough investigation. The MLPD determined that the threat was not credible and the lockdown was lifted and the students and staff resumed normal school functions.”

“Today’s situation is a reminder to talk to your sons and daughters about what to do if they see something written in bathrooms, or if they hear students talking about issues like this. Student and staff safety is our number one priority and we appreciate yours and your students understanding and cooperation during this time,” the e-mail concluded.
