Othello School District bond in jeopardy of failing

RITZVILLE — It appears as though Othello Proposition No. 1 Bonds to Construct and Renovate School Facilities will fail to garner enough yeas to be funded.

As of Monday, unofficial results tallied 725 yes votes and 629 no votes. The bond proposal is a revenue request and thereby requires at least 60 percent approval to pass.

If the $61.4 million construction bond somehow garners enough votes to pass property owners will have to pay 96 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value. The final project proposal includes new middle and elementary schools on district-owned property at the intersection of Lee Road and 14th Street. The proposed Othello High School remodel would increase capacity to 1,500 students and would add a third gym and a new auditorium.

The next vote count is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 21 with the election certified Feb. 23.
