Honor society inducts new members at Big Bend CC

MOSES LAKE — The Big Bend Community College inducted 19 students into its Phi Theta Kappa chapter Tuesday evening. Phi Theta Kappa is the community college honor society.

Students must have at least a 3.4 grade point average to qualify for Phi Theta Kappa. Students must have completed a minimum of 12 quarter hours at BBCC and must be enrolled for at least three quarter hours in the current semester.

Phi Theta Kappa member Melinda Dourte was the guest speaker. Dourte is a BBCC graduate and works as the executive assistant to BBCC president Terry Leas.

Family and friends were invited to the induction ceremony, said Matt Killebrew, BBCC director of communications. Leas presented each new chapter member with a white rose.

Big Bend’s chapter is celebrating its 50th anniversary in the 2017-18 academic year. Big Bend’s Rho Zeta chapter was chartered in November 1967.

Phi Theta Kappa members are eligible for academic scholarships that cover tuition, books and some room and board expenses at participating four-year colleges.

The 2018 inductees are Hannah Bedard, Spokane Valley; Alexa Bond, Moses Lake; David Fazende, Moses Lake; Yaneth Herrera, Warden; Reagan Lengenfelder, Moses Lake; Clarissa Muhlestein, Moses Lake; Russell Reed, Moses Lake; Peter Wolf, Ephrata; Areli Zarate, Quincy; Hannah Bensch, Quincy; Danielle Dunlap, Edmonds; Elexa Harris, Moses Lake; Miranda Kling, Moses Lake; Tyler Klein, Hazen, North Dakota; Dora Mendez, Othello; Callen Preston, Moses Lake; Hailey Wilson, Moses Lake; Anna Yarbro, Moses Lake and Bianca Mendoza Zubiran, Moses Lake.
