Voters reject change to irrigation district board

| February 15, 2018 2:00 AM

OTHELLO — Patrons of the East Columbia Basin Irrigation District have voted overwhelmingly to maintain the district’s current structure for its board of directors.

The proposal would have increased the number of directors from 5 to 7.

District voters cast 717 no votes and 208 yes votes on the proposal. The election was Feb. 8, and absentee ballots were counted Tuesday.

The results at the polling place were 223 no votes and 14 yes votes; the absentee results were 494 no votes and 194 yes votes. “Subsequently, the ECBID board will remain at five directors,” according to a press release from the district.

The election was the result of a petition presented by a group of landowners to the Adams County Commissioners, requesting a vote on the proposal. Qualified voters were landowners within the district.
