Mike Williams inducted into OHS Hall of Fame
Mike Williams, former Othello High School science teacher and assistant wrestling coach was honored at the Huskies home meet with Wapato last Tuesday, Jan. 23.
Williams, a 2016 inductee in the Washington State Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame was an assistant coach at OHS from 1965-1995, and the head coach at Othello Middle School from 1966-1973.
He was a key member of the staff on OHS teams that captured three state championships (1968, ’69 and ’74) and five second place finishes (1975, ’78, ’86 and ’95). During that stretch of time, 22 wrestlers were crowned champion, and 14 were runner-ups.
Williams started the Little-Guy wresting program in the late 60s and coordinated free-style tournaments. He coached the 1982 Cultural Exchange Teams and guided Team Washington to two appearances at the Junior Nationals in Iowa.
Several athletes he helped coach went on to be successful in their own right including Wayne Schutte, Mark Kondo, Ruben Martinez and Scot Bliss who are also members of the WSWCA Hall of Fame.
