Weekend toy giveaway for veterans' families

| December 6, 2018 2:00 AM

MOSES LAKE — Big Bend Community College’s Veterans Resource Center will be giving away toys to the families of qualified veterans this Saturday and Sunday.

The giveaway is being held in connection with Operation Homefront’s yearly Holiday Toy Drive, according to a BBCC news release. Operation Homefront is a nationwide charity that supports veterans and their families “so they can thrive – not simply struggle to get by – in the communities that they’ve worked so hard to protect,” according to the group’s mission statement on its website.

Since 2008, Operation Homefront has helped nearly 80,000 military families with its various holiday programs, according to BBCC.

“We’re grateful for Operation Homefront and what they do for our service members, and (we’re) honored to be a part of the distribution process through the year,” said BBCC Veterans Resource Officer Jim Leland.

Toy will be distributed first-come-first-served at the Moses Lake Eagles Lodge, 1517 W. Broadway Ave., from noon to 4 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, according to BBCC.

Because they are “intended for dependents of veterans, active military, guard and reserves” as well as all “post 9/11 wounded, ill or injured,” parents will need to bring a military ID, a copy of the DD Form 214, or a driver’s license showing veteran status, as well as a bag, when coming to pick up toys.
