MOSES LAKE — Four kids got brand-new bikes for reading books, courtesy of the Moses Lake Masons. The Masons sponsor the “Bikes for Books” contest as part of the annual summer reading program at the Moses Lake Public Library.

Jacob Duvall, Kallie Dale, Westley Jacobsen and Clara Center each won a new bike. Actually, Elizabeth Effington’s name was drawn, but Elizabeth already had a bike. She suggested drawing another winner, and Kallie got a bike as a result.

Tim Edwards, Moses Lake Masons secretary, said the Masons want to promote literacy, and give kids something to do over the summer. The Masons have sponsored Bikes for Books for a number of years in Moses Lake, said children’s librarian Vicky Skane.

The summer reading program wrapped up with a concert and announcement of the bike winners Friday afternoon. The summer reading program is a system-wide project of the North Central Regional Library.

Kids qualified for the drawing by reading for at least 10 hours during the summer, Skane said. Cheryl Schweizer can be reached via email at education@columbiabasinherald.com.
