Wildfire that broke out near Soap Lake may be human-caused

SOAP LAKE — A wildfire that burned an estimated 65 acres near Soap Lake on Wednesday may have been human-caused.
The fire reportedly broke out near Road B.5 Northeast, about a mile east of Soap Lake, about 5 p.m. Grant County Fire District No. 7, which covers the Soap Lake area, initially responded and Grant County Fire District No. 13, which covers the greater Ephrata area, provided mutual aid, as did Grant County Fire District No, 5 and the Ephrata Fire Department.
An advisory was sent out by the Grant County Sheriff’s Office asking the public to avoid traveling on state Route 28 near the vicinity of the fire.
GCFD No. 7 Chief Kirk Sheppard gave a rough estimate of 65 acres charred in the wildfire. He said at least one person is being questioned as a suspect in connection with the fire and the Grant County Fire Marshal is investigating.
